SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The crews of the Coast Guard Cutter Winslow Griesser (WPC 1116) and the Brazilian Navy offshore patrol vessel Guanabara (P-48) conducted a joint exercise June 30 in San Juan Harbor.

"This was a unique opportunity that proved valuable in sharing best practices and improving our understanding of capabilities and interoperability with our Brazilian Navy partners," said Lt. Cmdr. Michael Vega, Sector San Juan chief of law enforcement.

During the exercise, the crews of the Winslow Griesser and the Guanabara demonstrated a standard compliant vessel boarding over which they have authority or jurisdiction in international waters.  The Coast Guard and Brazilian boarding teams also completed a recreational safety boarding, exercised inter-service communications and engaged in a subject matter expert exchange, which included a discussion of each country’s law enforcement procedures.

Capt. Eric King, Sector San Juan commander also met with the Brazilian Naval Attaché’s Rear Adm. Roberto Bueno Jr. and Rear Adm. Newton Calvoso to discuss engagement opportunities between each service.

The Winslow Griesser is a 154-foot fast response cutter homeported in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
