UPDATE: U.S. Coast Guard suspends search in western Lake Erie

DETROIT — The U.S. Coast Guard has suspended their search in western Lake Erie for a possible person in the water following a distress call overheard on VHF-FM channel 16 Monday morning.

There have been no correlating reports of distress, missing persons, or overdue vessels.

At 8 p.m., July 3, U.S. Coast Guard Sector Detroit suspended search efforts in response to a distress broadcast originally heard at 10:45 a.m.

The radio transmission, which appears to have been made by a child, states, “My papa fell in the water.  I need help.”

Sector Detroit launched surface assets from Station Marblehead, Ohio, air assets from Air Station Detroit and were aided by Rescue Coordination Center Trenton with a Royal Canadian Air Force C-130 fixed-wing-aircraft.

Crews searched continuously for eight hours, covering 2,739 square nautical miles on western Lake Erie.
