Coast Guard, local agencies respond to oil discharge in Grand Bayou, Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS – The Coast Guard is responding to an oil discharge from an Orphan well in Grand Bayou and area of Magnolia, Louisiana, Saturday.

 

A Coast Guard Sector New Orleans Incident Management Division (IMD) personnel discovered an uncontrolled discharge from a State of Louisiana Orphan well at approximately 10:45 a.m., Thursday.

 

The discharge created a 1 mile by 100 foot rainbow sheen into Grand Bayou. The previous owner of the well was in the area of the discharge and deployed 200' of hard boom around the source.

 

The IMD personnel has contracted with ES&H and Wild Well Control to conduct clean up and repair operations. ES&H lined the shoreline with absorbent boom and also deployed a drum skimmer within the containment.

IMD conducted a shoreline assessment and observed approximately 100 feet of impacted shoreline adjacent to the source and approximately 90 gallons of dark oil within containment.

The source of the discharge has not been contained.

The cause of the discharge is under investigation.
