Coast Guard crew rescues two from sinking canoe near Crane Neck Point, NY

NEW YORK -- A Coast Guard station crew rescued two people in distress aboard a canoe near Crane Neck Point, New York, Monday.

Crewmembers from Coast Guard Station Eaton’s Neck were underway searching for a missing kayaker when they received notification of two people taking on water in a canoe in the vicinity of the search area.

The boatcrew located the canoe and discovered two people waving their paddles and signaling for help.

Once on scene, the two men were rescued off of their canoe that had been taking on water due to waves crashing over the top of the watercraft.

“The two boaters were taking on water with only one lifejacket aboard the canoe,” said Petty Officer 3rd Class John McMahon, a Station Eaton’s Neck crewmember. “The station crew quickly responded and prevented the situation from worsening.”

The two people and their canoe were transferred to the station by a Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat-Medium. No medical concerns were reported.
