Coast Guard, locals respond to high-speed ferry accident

 

BOSTON – Multiple Coast Guard crews are responding late Friday after a high-speed ferry with 48 people aboard hit a jetty at the Hyannis Harbor entrance. 

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England were notified at about 10 p.m. that the ferry Iyanough, which serves Nantucket to Hyannis, struck the jetty and grounded on the rocks. At least four people were reported to be injured.

Response boat crews from Coast Guard Stations Woods Hole, Chatham, and Brant Point launched to assist. An air crew from Air Station Cape Cod is en route. Local responders are also on scene.  

Rescue crews are scheduled to work into the night to oversee the safe transfer of all passengers and ferry crew. They will also work the Steam Ship Authority to assess Iyanough’s damage, and ensure safe navigation in the area. 

The cause of the grounding is under investigation.
