Coast Guard Sector Mobile holds change of command

NEW ORLEANS – Capt. Malcolm R. McLellan relieved Capt. Joseph H. Snowden as commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Mobile in an official change-of-command ceremony, in Mobile, Ala., Friday.

Snowden assumed command of Sector Mobile in May 2015 and directly managed and supervised 18 sub-units, including cutters, stations, aids to navigation teams, and a marine safety detachment, spread over four states – Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia - with over 420 miles of coast and 1,900 miles of inland waterway. Under his command, Sector Mobile saved over 2,000 lives, during search and rescue cases, and protected millions of dollars in property each year.

McLellan reported from Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston where he served as deputy sector commander.

Sector Mobile is responsible for 533 active duty, 210 reserve, and 335 civilian personnel distributed between six departments: prevention, response, logistics, planning, intelligence, and the command center. The sector maintains over 4,200 aids to navigation. Additionally, the sector carries out operations in support of Homeland Security and law enforcement.

The change of command is a time-honored tradition deeply rooted in Coast Guard and Naval history. It represents a total transfer of responsibility, authority and accountability from one individual to another.
