NEW YORK — The Coast Guard and local authorities assisted five mariners after their boat began taking on water near Romer Shoal, New Jersey, Thursday afternoon.

At approximately 2:45 p.m., watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector New York received a report via channel-16, stating the pleasure craft Stars & Stripes was taking on water.

Sector watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and launched two Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook 29-foot Response Boat Small (RB-S) crews. New York Fire Department Marine and New York Police Department Marine also launched rescue crews.

Once on scene, the Station Sandy Hook RB-S crew and the FDNY rescue crew immediately began assisting the mariners with dewatering efforts.

Once the source of the leak was determined and fixed, the Station RB-S crew escorted the Stars & Stripes to the Atlantic Highlands Marina.

“To ensure situations like this don’t occur, we strongly advise all mariners, no matter their experience, to double check and ensure their vessel is fully equipped with the necessary gear to operate as well as all required safety equipment prior to going out on the water,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Richard Clarke, a crewmember from Coast Guard Station Sandy Hook. “Our duty is not only to respond to events when they occur, but also to help educate and prevent events from happening in the first place.”

No injuries or pollution were reported.
