NEW YORK -- Coast Guard Lt. Kristopher Valdez relieved Lt. Jonathan Tice as the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Cutter Penobscot Bay Friday during a change of command ceremony at Coast Guard Aids to Navigation Team New York.

Capt. Michael Day, Commander, Coast Guard Sector New York presided over the ceremony.

Tice will report to George Washington University for graduate school.

Valdez was previously assigned to the Coast Guard Office of International Affairs and Foreign Policy in Washington, D.C.

The change of command ceremony is a formal ritual conducted before the assembled company of the command. It conveys to officers and enlisted personnel of the cutter that although the authority of command is relinquished by one person and assumed by another, it is still maintained without interruption.

The Coast Guard Cutter Penobscot Bay is a 140-foot domestic icebreaker, with a crew complement of approximately 18 (15 enlisted and 3 officers).
