SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard and Southern Marin Fire Protection District assisted a woman experiencing symptoms of a heart attack aboard the 54-foot passenger vessel, Salty Lady, 17 miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge, Wednesday.

A Salty Lady crewmember notified Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders via VHF-FM radio channel 16 at approximately 2:20 p.m., reporting that a 50-year-old passenger was experiencing chest pains and might be having a heart attack. 

After interviewing the crewmember and assessing the passenger's symptoms, a Coast Guard Station Golden Gate 47-foot Motor Lifeboat crew launched with an emergency medical technician from Southern Marin Fire Protection District aboard to provide immediate medical assistance.

The boat crew transferred the EMT onto the Salty Lady around 3:30 p.m., and escorted the vessel until it moored at Station Golden Gate, where emergency medical services personnel were waiting to transport the woman to the hospital.

“The timely call for help on channel 16 helped us coordinate our response quickly,” said Lt. Kim Shadwick, a command duty officer at Sector San Francisco. “The vessel operators were prepared for the emergency and allowed us to get the woman the medical attention she needed.”

Weather on scene at the time of the incident was reported as 9 mph winds with 57-degree air temperature and 54-degree waters.
