Coast Guard medevacs injured boater near Hobucken, NC

 

WILMINGTON, N.C. — A Coast Guard Station Hobucken crew medevaced an injured boater near Hobucken Friday.


Watchstanders at the Sector North Carolina Command Center in Wilmington received a report at about 5:30 p.m. that a 23-foot, Sea Hunt recreational fishing boat ran aground and a 64-year-old man ejected and injured his back.


A 24-foot Special Purpose Craft-Shallow Water (SPC-SW) crew launched from Station Hobucken at about 5:40 p.m. The crew arrived on scene in Goose Creek about a mile and a half north of the station at approximately 5:50 p.m.


The Coast Guard crew assessed the man and took him aboard the SPC-SW where he was put on oxygen. The crew took him to R.E. Mayo Seafood and Marina and placed him in the care of awaiting Pamlico County EMS.

"Even experienced boaters familiar with a given area can run aground," said Petty Officer 3rd Class John Zegarra, coxswain for the case. "We responded as quickly as possible to provide first-responder medical care and transportation for the man, and were happy to get him to Pamlico County EMS for further evaluation."
