Coast Guard rescues kite surfer near Crissy Field

SAN FRANCISCO — The Coast Guard rescued a kite surfer in distress near Crissy Field Thursday evening.

Coast Guard Sector San Francisco watchstanders received a report from a kite surfer in the vicinity of the distressed surfer at approximately 4:50 p.m.

Coast Guard Maritime Safety and Security Team San Francisco boatcrew diverted from a completed mission to assist due to proximity. Boatcrew members retrieved and transferred the kite surfer to St. Francis Yacht Club with no reported injuries.

"We are typically a unit designed for maritime security, but on occasion, search and rescue cases do come up, so when it does, we are always ready to respond," said Petty Officer 1st Class Nick Grim, a coxswain assigned to the MSST. "We advise surfers to take extra precaution while out on the water by carrying a waterproof cell phone, VHF radio or some other form of communication so that way when they do find themselves in a situation, they can reach out for assistance."
