CORRECTION: Coast Guard responds to capsized vessel near Marina del Rey 

SAN PEDRO, Calif. -- Coast Guard Station Los Angeles-Long Beach, along with Forward Operating Base Point Mugu, Baywatch Del Rey, and Seatow responded to a vessel in distress near Marina del Rey, May 6, 2017.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach received notification at 4:40p.m., of a 27-foot pleasure craft that capsized with three people aboard eight miles west of Marina del Rey.

Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach immediately launched a MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter crew from Forward Operating Base Point Mugu, and a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Los Angeles-Long Beach. 

The Coast Guard urges mariners to always:

  • Wear life jackets while on the water.
  • Have a working marine-band radio on board. 
  • Carry marine flares on board the vessel.
  • Ensure bilge pumps are operational and vessels are secure for heavy winds and rain.
  • Stay Informed - The public should remain aware of forecasted weather conditions and monitor progress through local television, radio and internet. Check the current and expected weather and water conditions before heading out, and be aware that weather conditions can quickly change. 
  • File a float plan.
