JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The crew of Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville conducted a change of command ceremony Friday at Naval Station Mayport.

During the ceremony Capt. Jeffrey Dixon transferred command of Coast Guard Sector Jacksonville to Capt. Todd Wiemers.

Dixon served as the commanding officer of Sector Jacksonville since June 2015 and has overseen numerous Coast Guard activities throughout the northeastern Florida region.

The change of command ceremony marks a transfer of total responsibility and authority from one individual to another. It is a time honored tradition, conducted before the assembled crew, as well as honored guests and dignitaries to formally demonstrate the continuity of the authority within a command.

“I am extremely excited to come to the Jacksonville area,” said Wiemers. “I cannot wait to get to work here to ensure Northeast Florida continues to receive top-notch support from their Coast Guard.”

Following the change of command, a retirement ceremony was held for Dixon, who served the nation for more than 27 years.

“It’s been an honor for me to serve in this amazing organization,” said Dixon. “I am truly grateful to everyone for all the support over the years, as well as to all the fantastic Coast Guardsmen with whom I’ve worked.”

Wiemers comes to Jacksonville from Coast Guard Headquarters, where he held the position of deputy assistant commandant for capability.
