New Coast Guard captain of the port takes command of Northern Texas
HOUSTON — The media are invited to a Coast Guard change-of-command ceremony Monday that will formally recognize the new commander responsible for Coast Guard activities in the Houston Ship Channel and northern half of Texas.
WHO: Capt. Kevin Oditt will be relieving Capt. Peter F. Martin as the Commanding Officer of Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston.
WHEN: Monday, April 24, 2017 at 10 a.m. (Media please arrive by 9:45 a.m.)
WHERE: San Jacinto College, Slocomb Auditorium, 8060 Spencer Highway, Pasadena, Texas, 77505
Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston encompasses Coast Guard jurisdiction from Lake Charles, Louisiana to the Colorado River. These units regulate, protect and monitor all ports and waterways in the region including the Houston Ship Channel and Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. There are three marine safety units, five small boat stations, two aids to navigation teams and eight cutters in the sector's area of responsibility.
The change-of-command ceremony is a time-honored, military tradition. It is a formal ritual conducted before the assembled company of the command. It conveys to officers and enlisted personnel of the cutter that although the authority of command is relinquished by one person and assumed by another, it is still maintained without interruption.
Media interested in attending are requested to RSVP by 4 p.m. Sunday, April 23rd to Coast Guard Public Affairs Texas at 832-293-1293 or publicaffairshouston@uscg.mil
