US Coast Guard receives National Society of Black Engineers Chairman's Award

 

WASHINGTON --- The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) recognized the U.S. Coast Guard as a committed partner in diversity by presenting it with the society's Chairman's Award. Rear Adm. Michael Johnston, executive director, Deputy Commandant for Mission Support, received the award on behalf of the service at the NSBE's 43rd Annual Convention March 30 in Kansas City, MO.

"This award means so much to the Coast Guard," said Johnston. "We strive to encourage young people to see the Coast Guard as an opportunity to learn and work in a diverse and rewarding environment as they pursue their futures in the engineering fields. The Chairman's Award means we are doing what we set out to do with NSBE."

Among the examples of Coast Guard involvement with NSBE is its participation in the Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) program. Last summer, 14 programs operated in 12 U.S. cities and benefitted more than 3,500 under-served students.

The Chairman's Award is one of the society's most prestigious honors and is given to an organization which distinguishes itself as a partner with the society that works to increase the number of culturally responsible black engineers who excel academically, demonstrate professional success and positively impact the community. As a member of the Board of Corporate Affiliates and an advocate for educational equality and diversity, the Coast Guard has more than exceeded the required benchmarks to receive the award, according to NSBE.
