SAN DIEGO – The Coast Guard medevaced a 31-year-old woman Thursday from a cruise ship approximately 200 miles south of San Diego.

Star Princess, a 951-foot cruise ship, personnel notified the Coast Guard that a woman aboard the ship needed further medical treatment due to potential for hemorrhaging of the brain at 3:54 p.m., Wednesday, when the ship was 572 miles south of San Diego.

Coast Guard personnel monitored the ship’s progress toward San Diego and dispatched a crew aboard an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Sector San Diego to assist once the Star Princess was within the Jayhawk's range.

Once on scene, the Jayhawk crew completed five hoists to deploy the rescue swimmer, hoist the patient and caregivers into the helicopter and retrieve the rescue swimmer before returning to Sector San Diego.

The Jayhawk was met by an awaiting ambulance crew, who transported the woman to Sharp Memorial Hospital in San Diego.
