South Dakota USDA Rural Development - Fall 2017 Edition
|
Small Business Saturday, November 25th, is just around the corner. Here are some of the many reasons why YOU should shop small and shop local.
- When you shop locally, your money recirculates within the community and state, creating up to 75% more tax revenue.
- Small, local businesses are the largest employers nationally.
- Buying local food is fresher and comes with many health benefits.
- The unique, locally found products you buy will keep people asking, "Where can I find those?!"
- Local businesses support other local businesses, such as banks, accountants, advertising, farms, etc.
- Local businesses support the non-profits and good work in the community.
- You'll have a better, more friendly experience and service.
- You're also supporting your local school, police, fire department, and city through the taxes you pay.
- Shopping locally is the best way to show pride in your community and help protect the businesses that make it unique.
Help promote and support the local economy by spending your cash locally on....

Energy Efficient Grain Dryer and Grocery Store Cooler Projects
There is a way to save energy and money throughout these fluctuating fall temperatures!
USDA Rural Development reminds agricultural producers and small business owners that there is time to submit an application for the Rural Energy for America Program (REAP). The program provides energy grants and loans to make energy efficiency improvements such as LED lighting, coolers or refrigeration units, doors & windows, insulation or HVAC upgrades, grain dryers, switching from a diesel to electric irrigation motor, replacement of energy-inefficient equipment, etc. Funds can also be used to install renewable energy systems, including solar, wind, renewable biomass (including anaerobic digesters), small hydroelectric, hydrogen and geothermal. While applications are accepted year-round, the 2018 application deadline is March 31, 2018 where projects of all sizes may compete.
Eligible agricultural producers and rural small businesses may qualify for the REAP program, which provides a grant of 25% of the eligible project costs or provides a guaranteed loan for up to 75% of the eligible project costs. To be eligible, producers need to earn 50% of their gross income from agricultural production. In addition, businesses must be classified as small according to the Small Business Administration (SBA) definition, which encompasses most businesses in South Dakota.
For more information on how to apply, visit South Dakota's REAP website or contact the SD Rural Development Energy Coordinator, Jolene Pravecek at jolene.pravecek@sd.usda.gov or (605) 655-3516.
