Agriculture and Food Research Initiative | Foundational and Applied Science
The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) is the Nation's flagship competitive grants program that provides funding for fundamental and applied research, education, and Extension/outreach projects in the food and agricultural sciences.
In this Request for Applications, NIFA is seeking applications for 37 priorities in the following AFRI program areas:
- Plant health and production and plant products
- Animal health and production and animal products
- Food safety, nutrition, and health
- Bioenergy, natural resources, and environment
- Agriculture systems and technology
- Agriculture economics and rural communities

New Program in Fiscal Year 2026
- A cross-cutting program area priority in “Rapid Response to Emerging and Re-emerging Pest and Disease Events Across Food and Agricultural Systems" has been added.
- A Mentoring Plan is now required for all AFRI grant applications (excluding workshop grants, equipment grants, and sabbatical grants) for projects that involve any type of education, training, or mentoring of students or other individuals.
