The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) produces this weekly report using data and products from the National Water and Climate Center and other agencies. The report focuses on seasonal snowpack, precipitation, temperature, and drought conditions in the U.S.
Several new feet of snow have accumulated in many mountain regions in the western U.S. since February 12, especially in California, Utah, and Colorado. Heavy rates of snowfall produced a fatal avalanche for a group of experienced backcountry skiers in the Lake Tahoe, California area. The event also caused power outages and closed roads and schools. Despite the heavy snow accumulation, most of the snowpack in the western U.S. remains well below the typical amounts for the season due to extended dry and warm spells. Many NRCS SNOTEL sites continue to measure record and near-record low levels of snowpack as of February 19.
