Veterinary Medical Officers play a vital role in protecting the health of animals and safeguarding the public. They diagnose, treat, and help prevent animal diseases while advancing our understanding of how those diseases spread. Their work includes investigating, inspecting, and addressing animal diseases, animal pollution, animal welfare, contamination of food of animal origin, health and safety of imported animals and animal products, and the safety and efficacy of a wide variety of animals.

Animal Health Technicians help protect animal health and support safe, efficient global trade. In this role, you will support programs that facilitate trade and prevent the spread of animal diseases through the export or import of live animals, animal byproducts, biological materials, and organisms. You will apply technical expertise to prevent, control, and eradicate animal diseases while facilitating international trade.

Supervisory Animal Health Technician 

Supervisory Animal Health Technicians play a key role in safeguarding animal health at U.S. ports of entry. They oversee daily operations involved in receiving and handling imported livestock and bird shipments. Their responsibilities include assisting Veterinary Medical Officers with examinations and treatments, collecting blood and tissue samples for testing, and ensuring that all import documentation—such as data entry, form processing, and paperwork reviews—is accurate and complete.
