AmeriCorps VISTA Monthly Updates

Margaret Garvey

Dear AmeriCorps VISTA sponsors,

The season of gratitude is here. Although I believe in cultivating a daily spirit of gratitude, in our culture, this time of year has been set aside as the time to reflect on the things that we should express appreciation for. If I have not had the opportunity to express my gratitude to you in person, through a screen, or in an email – thank you. Your time, your effort, and your passion are appreciated and seen by all of us at AmeriCorps VISTA. The partnership that we have with all our sponsors is key to the success of our work.

While I am committed to sharing words of gratitude for you and to you at every opportunity, I also acknowledge that actions matter, too. If you have been a sponsor for some time, you have probably become accustomed to our consistent cry (okay, request) for member stories. We always want more. Why? Because one of our best ways of thanking you is to shine a spotlight on your organization through the service stories of AmeriCorps members.

Using our platforms to elevate the impact of your organization, gives us the opportunity to both advocate for the necessity and effectiveness of the AmeriCorps VISTA program while also drawing more eyes to the work that you do. We are honored to share these stories. This is how we put our gratitude into action.

As we continue through this season, I hope that you take some time to let us know about your members and how their service is helping your organization to expand its reach into communities. There are a few ways to do this:

  • Complete the VISTA Progress Report Supplement. Additional information is provided in this message.
  • Send a message with a short overview of your project/member story to VISTANews@americorps.gov. Our Marketing, Outreach, and Recruitment team will follow up with next steps.
  • Tag AmeriCorps VISTA (#AmeriCorpsVISTA, @AmeriCorpsVISTA) on your social media posts. We like to repost your member highlights – especially on X (formerly Twitter).

We hope that you find joy, peace, and lots of memory-making moments this season (and beyond).

In service,

Maggie Garvey, Acting Director
AmeriCorps VISTA

Impact by the Numbers: VISTA Progress Report Supplement

2023 VPRS Data

How do we share the comprehensive impact of AmeriCorps members? Each year, sponsors are invited to share the success and key accomplishments of their project via the AmeriCorps VISTA Progress Report Supplement. The information that is provided allows us to share the impressive results that sponsors are having across the country using AmeriCorps VISTA resources. The results are shared with elected officials, community stakeholders, and audiences across social media. Take a few minutes to see some of the highlights from fiscal year 2023 shared above.

Thank you to the hundreds of sponsors who submitted their VISTA Progress Report Supplement for fiscal year 2024. For sponsors who have not submitted their progress report supplements yet, please do so as soon as possible. The deadline for submitting the report was Friday, Nov. 8, 2024.

As a reminder, this is a required report if you had an active Memorandum of Agreement and AmeriCorps members serving in the VISTA program at any time during the period of Oct. 1, 2023, to Sept. 30, 2024. This includes both active projects and projects that closed within the last fiscal year. Please refer to the September 30 message for detailed information about completing the report. We look forward to sharing the results with you next year.

Stories from the Field

Help us share how AmeriCorps members are making a difference! Send member accomplishments and pictures to VISTANews@americorps.gov. Include a link to additional information when possible. Submissions should be sent by the 5th of each month for inclusion in that month's sponsor message. We may also share submissions on AmeriCorps VISTA's social media pages and through other messages.

Housing Policy Update:
Sponsors May Provide Reimbursable
Housing Support Directly to Members

To reduce the administrative burden placed on sponsors that choose to support members with additional financial housing assistance, the AmeriCorps VISTA program is removing the requirement that housing support must be paid directly to a landlord or leasing agent. This policy is effective as of Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024.

A sponsor may, at its discretion, provide support for housing for AmeriCorps members serving in the VISTA program. While there is no maximum threshold set for the amount of assistance, it should be based on the actual costs members paid for housing (reimbursable costs) and should be consistent with the member’s commitment to live among and at the economic level of the people served. Moreover, a sponsor’s support for housing must be offered equally to all AmeriCorps members at the site who are serving in the VISTA program.

Support for housing can be provided in the form of a one-time security deposit and/or as housing reimbursement support. All housing support must be provided as a reimbursable expense directly to a member or paid directly to the landlord or leasing agent.

Financial or in-kind support for members may be provided under the following conditions:

  • Support is offered and available equally to all members.
  • Reimbursable expenses, in the form of cash or checks, can be given directly to the member. Cash or checks that are non-reimbursable expenses may not be given directly to the member.
  • Support offered does not violate AmeriCorps VISTA’s legislation that mandates members must, to the maximum extent practicable, make a commitment to live among and at the economic level of the people being served.

Housing support may impact a member's reportable income. For more information, please see the Income Disregard letter (2023).

Refer to the AmeriCorps VISTA Sponsor Handbook for additional supplemental benefits sponsors may provide to members.

Please note that you will not see this policy change reflected in the current version of AmeriCorps VISTA’s Sponsor and Member Handbooks. The policy change will be reflected in the next iteration of handbooks.

Request for Concept Papers

The AmeriCorps VISTA program's fiscal year 2025 Request for Concept Papers funding opportunity is now open. AmeriCorps will be accepting concept papers for new projects twice in fiscal year 2025.
