AmeriCorps has been made aware of recent outages in California’s and Delaware’s reporting to the National Sex Offender Public Website. Currently, the California State Sex Offender Registry is occasionally reporting, and the Delaware State Sex Offender Registry is regularly reporting as it has in the past. AmeriCorps will continue to maintain contact with the National Sex Offender Public Website technical support until California’s registry is reporting in a stable, regular manner.
Truescreen has been able to process and complete checks. For grantees not using Truescreen, a complete National Sex Offender Public Website check must be obtained by going to nsopw.gov and running a check with all jurisdictions reporting. If California is not reporting when the nsopw.gov check is run, grantees are required to conduct the sex offender check for California by going directly to their state sex offender registry website. When you go to the website, you will have to read and acknowledge the disclaimer by checking the box at the bottom. Below the check box you will have to click “Continue” to advance.
The site will lead you to the registry where you will go to the drop-down box located in the middle next to “Search California Sex Offenders.” In the drop-down box, you will select “By Name” where it will give you the option to put the first and last name of the person you are searching for. Type the first name in the “First Name’” field and type the last name in the “Last Name” field. Names entered should match first and last names on acceptable name documentation. For more information on name documentation, see the National Service Criminal History Check Manual. After you entered the names, click the “Search” button located below. When you click “Search,” it will process the name that was entered. Once it has finished processing, the “Search” box will change. There will be a green check mark with the word “Success!” next to it along with a button that says “Continue.” Click the “Continue” button.
If the site was unable to find an offender by the name that was searched, the bottom of the page will say “No Offenders Found.” If there are offenders listed, grantees should confirm that the applicant is not listed. Grantees must maintain documentation that the check was completed, reviewed, and an eligibility determination made on time. For more information, please see the National Service Criminal History Check Manual and Using National Sex Offender Public Website and State Repositories Manual.
