Climate Change Discussion Guide

AmeriCorps is tackling the most important issues of our time, including climate change. Whether through national service or volunteerism, we know that people from very diverse backgrounds can come together around a shared purpose that helps bridge the differences between us. Addressing climate change will take an “all hands on deck” approach, and while neighbors may disagree with each other on specific approaches, we can start by respectfully seeing, hearing, and understanding one another.

The Climate Change Discussion Guide is a resource that can be used to assist community members in having productive conversations about climate change that can then be paired with a service project that you and your conversation partners can achieve together. The guide will help build your “bridging muscles” and with intention, the opportunity for abundant connections and creative solutions are infinite.

Grantee Spotlight

Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families is a project that provides caregiver support services for veterans and military families and has existed since 2001. The caregiver support is provided by deploying AmeriCorps members through 10 partner agencies located in five states and is funded by AmeriCorps.

Legacy Corps for Veterans and Military Families was developed to meet the need for alternative respite care strategies designed specifically for veteran and military caregivers. The goal in providing caregiver respite is to keep families in their communities longer, postponing or avoiding institutional care completely.

What is Suspension?

An alternative to releasing a participant, a program can suspend the participant's term of service for up to two years.

Resources for Suspension

  • Your portfolio manager as a thought partner.
  • The Member Suspension Resource is available on the AmeriCorps.gov Grantee pages, under the Manage Member resources.
  • My AmeriCorps Member Management Guide.
  • Terms and Conditions for AmeriCorps State and National Grants.
  • 45 CFR 2522.230 Under what circumstances may an AmeriCorps participant be released from completing a term of service, and what are the consequences?

ASN Grantee Call Q&A

1. Are there any circumstances in which grantees are required by the governing authorities to provide suspension?

45 CFR 2522.230 (c 1, 2): Suspended service.

(1) A program must suspend the service of an individual who faces an official charge of a violent felony (e.g., rape, homicide) or sale or distribution of a controlled substance.

(2) A program must suspend the service of an individual who is convicted of possession of a controlled substance.

2. Do member benefits cease during a suspension? Can programs decide if they would continue to provide benefits (eg, health insurance), but living allowance must cease?

45 CFR 2522.230 states, "An individual may not receive a living allowance or other benefits, and may not accrue service hours, during a period of suspension under this provision." For additional information, please read AmeriCorps State and National Terms and Conditions.

3. Can members only be suspended for compelling personal circumstances or disciplinary reasons? Or, could suspensions be processed for agreed on breaks of service with the program, such as for a planned vacation or something similar?

Section E of the AmeriCorps State and National Terms and Conditions states: Temporary Leave, Healthcare, and Benefits. If temporary leave is appropriate, grantees have the flexibility to determine the duration of the absence and may choose to continue providing health or other benefits to the member during the period of absence. The member may be suspended (via compelling personal circumstances) during the period of temporary leave. If suspended, the member may not receive a living allowance.
