“City
of Mesa employees are committed to knowledge, respect and integrity. I support
National service alumni working in Mesa because they share these values and are
dedicated to making a difference in our community,” said Mayor John Giles at
the announcement
of the City of Mesa becoming an Employer of National Service. The
announcement on April 5 coincided with Mayor,
County, and Tribal Recognition Day for National Service, a day where local
government leaders celebrate the value of national service in their communities.
A new study released by the Corporation for National and
Community Service (CNCS) confirms what those in the service world have known
all along: those who serve in AmeriCorps are more skilled in working with
diverse populations and in solving problems or handling unexpected events than
before service.
The AmeriCorps Alumni Outcomes Survey shows that:
- 97% of alumni rated themselves as excellent or
good at working with people different from themselves, and 86% of alumni
reported that their AmeriCorps experience helped them increase this skill
either a great deal or somewhat.
- 90% of alumni agreed or strongly agreed that
they could solve difficult problems, accomplish goals, handle unexpected events
and unforeseen situations, remain calm, and identify multiple solutions.
- 78% of alumni agreed or strongly agreed that
during AmeriCorps they learned more about the real world or the rest of the
world.
