Adapting frameworks for aging in place

As the number of elders with dementia increases, so does the need to adapt current frameworks for aging in place to better meet the needs of that population.

For that reason, we encourage you to review videos and slides from a three-day virtual workshop titled Aging in Place with Dementia.

The workshop’s presenters include Dr. Bruce Finke from the Indian Health Service and Erin Long from the Administration for Community Living. The workshop covers topics such as:

  • Creating dementia-friendly public spaces and transportation systems
  • Developing metrics to evaluate programs that support aging in place
  • Implementing programs in diverse community settings

Creating safer spaces for people with dementia

American Indians and Alaska Natives are significantly more likely to develop dementia, compared with people from other racial/ethnic groups.

That’s why the International Association for Indigenous Aging is committed to helping tribal communities create safer and more inclusive environments for people with dementia.

Learn more about that work by watching the following videos:

Survey to assess the needs of LGBTQ+ elders

Survey respondents have the option of entering a raffle to win 1 of 20 gift cards, worth $50 each.

Microtransit for elders and people with disabilities

A technical assistance brief (PDF, 147 KB, 4 pp) highlights the importance of microtransit services that meet accessibility standards and are as inclusive as possible.

To increase the likelihood of a microtransit service’s success and financial sustainability, the brief recommends:

  • Engaging with stakeholders during all phases of service development, design, implementation, and evaluation
  • Designing a microtransit service that reflects feedback from people who intend to use it
  • Making reasonable accommodations to meet the mobility needs of elders and people with disabilities

Resources to improve understanding of PCTI

Research suggests that nearly 90% of elders have experienced at least one traumatic event during their lifetime. A history of trauma can significantly impact the physical and mental health of elders and their caregivers. That’s why person-centered, trauma-informed care (PCTI) is so important.

New resources to improve understanding of PCTI among both professional and informal caregivers are now available online. Those resources include:

Funding opportunities

Affordable housing for people with disabilities

Applications due: February 12
Learn more about the affordable housing funding opportunity

The U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is offering funds to support the development of affordable rental housing for people with disabilities.

HUD is especially interested in projects that connect people with disabilities to community-based services that promote housing stability.

Approximately 21 grants will be awarded for a five-year performance period.
