The U.S. Census Bureau has produced a new iteration of the
Citizen Voting Age Population by Race and Ethnicity (CVAP) file. This tabulation from the 2009-2013 American Community Survey (ACS) shows
estimates of the CVAP for multiple levels of geography including the small area
geography of tracts and block groups.
The downloadable files show the population of individuals 18 and older by
citizenship status and race for the nation, states, District of Columbia,
Puerto Rico, counties, minor civil divisions, places, tracts and block groups.
The files reflect both the population living in housing units and in group
quarters, such as college dormitories. The new files and technical
documentation along with previous versions of the files can be found on the
Census Bureau's Redistricting Data Office website.
This is the fifth year in a row that the ACS has produced estimates of this population. Prior to the ACS, communities
would have to wait 10 years for an update on the citizen voting-age population.
Please contact the Redistricting Data Office at (301) 763-4039
if you have any questions.
The ACS is an ongoing survey that samples about 3.5 million
addresses a year, and provides communities with current
information they need to plan investments and services. Information from the
survey generates data that help determine how more than $400 billion in federal
and state funds are distributed each year.
The ACS provides reliable statistics that are indispensable to anyone who has to make informed decisions about the future. These statistics are required by all levels of government to manage or evaluate a wide range of programs, but are also useful for research, education, journalism, business and advocacy. If you have questions about this survey, please call our Customer Services Center on 1 (800) 923-8282.
