Header FINAL

July 1, 2022

Dear friend,

The American people learned this week that the days and moments leading up to the attack on the Capitol were worse than we imagined. What we heard during the select committee's latest hearing were clear examples of criminal behavior. Regardless of political beliefs, we all need to stand up and denounce the former president's actions that nearly destabilized our democracy. I applaud the committee for presenting its evidence in a clear and fair manner to uncover the unsettling truth behind that day.

As we enter the holiday weekend to mark our country's independence, I ask you to remember and honor our most cherished values: democracy and justice. History shows that we must keep fighting to live by these values. Let us keep working to create the future we envision for our country.

Below is another update on the work my staff and I have done recently to serve you.

This Week's Casework Success Story

Jude from Pacific Beach contacted my office last week to ask for assistance regarding COVID-19 rental relief funds she was owed from the San Diego Housing Commission (SDHC). She applied for assistance on behalf of her tenant who had been approved to receive relief. When my staff contacted SDHC to inquire about the delay, the Commission notified my staff it had ran out of funds and was waiting for the City of San Diego to disburse additional funds. Yesterday, Jude received her owed rent relief from SDHC in the amount of $30,800.

Checking Your Passport Before Summer Travel

Summer travel is in full swing and my office is here to help! Please be aware of your passport's expiration date before finalizing your travel plans. San Diego's passport agency has already expanded appointments to pre-COVID-19 levels, but there are no exceptions for leisure travel. Emergency in-person appointments are only available for those who are traveling within three days if an immediate family outside of the U.S. has died, is dying (e.g. hospice care), or has a life-threatening illness or injury.

San Diego Proudly Remains a Coast Guard City

CG recertification

On Monday, I attended a ceremony to celebrate our designation as a Coast Guard City for a second time. This five-year designation recognizes cities and communities that support local Coast Guard members and help their families adjust to their “home away from home.” We thank the men and women of the Coast Guard who work so hard to keep us safe. I never miss a chance to tell people about San Diego’s long and proud role in the national defense and I'm thrilled to share the news about this special recognition as well!

San Diego Stands Up for Reproductive Rights

SD Roe presser

Also this week, I stood with San Diego leaders to denounce the Supreme Court's decision to overturn federal abortion rights. Access to abortion is still available in California and I applaud our state lawmakers for advancing efforts to codify these rights into law.
