Header FINAL

June 17, 2022

Dear friend,

High prices for gas, food and other necessary articles are weighing down on San Diego families and Americans all across the country. To address these high costs and supply chain problems, the House passed the Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act and the Ocean Shipping Reform Act this week. Among its provisions, the Ocean Shipping Reform Act, which was signed into law by President Biden yesterday, addresses the high late fees charged by ocean carriers and terminals which are paid by importers and exporters. These charges are then passed on to the consumer and add to inflation.

The Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act brings down the cost for farmers in the field, encourages competition in the meatpacking industry, and helps make cheaper and cleaner biofuels more widely available. While many of you may be struggling to make ends meet during this difficult time, please know I am committed to all the possible solutions to provide relief.

Below is another update on the work my staff and I have done recently to serve you.

This Week's Casework Success Story

Marie from Kearny Mesa contacted my office in April to request assistance with a refund from 2020 to which she was entitled after her mother passed away. According to Marie, the IRS blocked the refund from being issued because her mother's identification had not been verified. My staff worked with Marie to provide IRS with the death certificate, a copy of the family trust, and other documents proving Marie was the legal beneficiary of the refund. This week, the refund was issued in the amount of $10,951.86.

"After about one year, and help from you (or I’d still be waiting), I finally received my mother’s 2020 tax refund in the mail today! Thank you so much for all your help!"

- Marie from Kearny Mesa

Congratulations to Coronado High School's Class of 2022!

Coronado HS graduation

Yesterday, I was honored to be the keynote speaker at Coronado High School's graduation ceremony. A bright future awaits these students who have endured so much over the past two years. This accomplishment now marks a new chapter in their lives and I was thrilled to share the wisdom I have acquired throughout my career. I want to thank the senior class leadership for inviting me to participate and congratulations to Coronado High School's Class of 2022!

The Future of Our Food Supply

Cibus

On Thursday, I met with representatives from Cibus, a local company focused on biological approaches to crop protection. They shared how their technology can help address global hunger, climate change, and the global fertilizer shortage. We also discussed how Cibus might share their work and findings with Congress to address critical food and agricultural problems.

Praise for the New Democrat Coalition Inflation Action Plan

Last week, the New Democrat Coalition released its action plan to fight inflation and reduce costs for Americans. Policy experts and economists have supported this action plan and called it the “best inflation-fighting blueprint to come out of Congress yet." In the days since the plan's release, the New Dem action plan has been featured in the Washington Post, CNBC, Forbes and in an op-ed I authored for Fox. I also spoke about this plan in a recent interview with the Progressive Policy Institute.

New Dems are the only members in Congress who formed an inflation working group and a robust plan to address the critical issue of inflation. We still have a lot of work to do, and my colleagues and I will continue to seek ways to provide relief for struggling American families.
