Capitol Dome Restoration Update

Dome Restoration Survey

As the Dome Restoration Project preparation gets underway trucks will begin to deliver equipment and supplies to the East and West Fronts of the U.S. Capitol beginning January 8, 2014. These deliveries will occur between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Flagmen will direct pedestrians to use the sidewalk during the delivery process for safety. If a pedestrian is unable to use the alternate sidewalk due to the need for wheelchair accessibility or other accommodation, then the flagmen will direct the truck traffic to stop and allow the pedestrian to safely pass on the sidewalk. Additionally, a staging area will be established on the northwest lawn of the U.S. Capitol for the duration of the project. more

Cannon Stone Work

Cannon Building

The Architect of the Capitol is currently installing a protective netting to the exterior stone façade of the Cannon House Office Building. This work will enhance safety at all entrances to the building by capturing failing modillions from the pediment cornice. Work is being performed between the hours of 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. Pedestrian detours will be implemented on Independence Avenue from January 18 through January 20, and on New Jersey Avenue from January 21 through January 24. Completion of this project is expected at the end of January. more

Statue Moves

Statue Moves

During the first week of January, as approved by the Joint Committee on the Library, three statues in the National Statuary Hall collection were moved from the second-floor Senate connecting corridor. This is an area that is not accessible to most visitors and has been designated for the display of future marble busts of vice presidents. The statues of John Hanson (Maryland), Patrick Anthony McCarran (Nevada), and Roger Williams (Rhode Island) joined other statues in the Hall of Columns on the first floor of the House wing.
