5th Birthday Campaign Weekly Theme: Nutrition

Every child deserves a 5th Birthday USAID: From the American People
5th Birthday Theme: Nutrition

The Every Child Deserves a 5th Birthday campaign aims to engage the public and raise awareness about ending preventable child deaths within a generation. A child’s future can be determined years before they reach their fifth birthday. Good nutrition is a foundation for survival, health and development, especially during the critical 1,000-day window from pregnancy to a child’s second birthday. Children who are adequately nourished do better in school and are more likely to become healthy adults who can give their own children a better start in life. Well-nourished women face fewer risks during pregnancy and childbirth.

Globally, more than one-third of children die due to the underlying factor of undernutrition. This condition can span generations; a woman who is poorly nourished faces a greater risk of having a difficult pregnancy and giving birth to an undernourished child. We can address undernutrition by promoting breastfeeding; giving expectant mothers, new babies, and young children food with improved nutritional content; and supplementing local foods with micronutrients. Healthy bodies and strong minds will help make communities resilient and more able to thrive.
