While laser strike numbers are down 14 percent since 2024, the FAA and our law enforcement partners are still battling against numbers that are too high. California topped the list of states with the most pilot-reported laser strikes in 2025, with a little more than 1,300. Texas is next on the list at 1,100 strikes, followed by Florida with around 650. You can check out state-specific data by visiting our laser strike webpage.
Shining a laser at an aircraft poses a serious safety threat and is a federal crime. Lasers can incapacitate pilots, many of whom are flying airplanes with hundreds of passengers. People who shine lasers at aircraft face FAA fines of up to $11,000 per violation as well as federal, state and local penalties.
This week’s guest Weather Squad forecaster is Boston’s Eric Fisher with WBZ-TV. Eric brings us the rest of the week’s weather, which features rain for some states in the Southeast and snow out in the Midwest. The Northeast should get a break from the colder temperatures this weekend.
Remember that while temperatures may start rising in some parts of the country, many airports are still running winter weather operations to keep flights safe. That means your plane may be on the ground for longer than anticipated for deicing procedures or surface clearing. Always pack your patience, even as spring knocks at the door!
