Join EPA on Dec. 10-11 for two days of engagement, learning and networking on pollution prevention at the 2024 National Pollution Prevention Training and Conference! The meeting will bring together representatives from EPA, grantees, academia, industry, non-governmental organizations and state and federal agencies.
Participants will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of P2, meet others working in the P2 field and strengthen connections to other practitioners. Participants will also learn more about topics such as reducing pollution and finding chemical alternatives, including for some chemicals EPA has regulated under the Toxic Substances Control Act.
We have reached capacity for in-person registration. However, you can still participate virtually and join the waitlist for in-person participation. The registration deadline for virtual attendance is Dec 2.

EPA, ACS and 2024 Green Chemistry Challenge Award Winners
On Sept. 26, 2024, EPA and the American Chemical Society announced the winners of the 2024 Green Chemistry Challenge Awards for new and innovative green chemistry technologies. This year’s winners developed chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the generation and use of hazardous substances, use less energy, and are more sustainable.
Jitesh Soares (ACS); Anahita Williamson (EPA); John Warner (Warner Babcock Institute for Green Chemistry); Meredith Williams (California Dept. of Toxic Substances Control, retired); Jennie Romer (EPA); LaTrease Garrison (ACS); Adelina Voutchkova (ACS); Paul Anastas (Yale School of the Environment)
EPA is now accepting nominations for the 2025 Green Chemistry Challenge Awards through Dec. 13, 2024, with winners announced in fall 2025.
On Sept. 17, EPA hosted a webinar celebrating 17 winners of the Regional Pollution Prevention Recognition Program. EPA's Regional Pollution Prevention Recognition Program is an annual, voluntary, and non-monetary awards program that recognizes organizations whose P2 successes and practices exemplify environmental excellence and innovation.

On Sept. 19, Jennie Romer, EPA’s Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pollution Prevention, hosted a webinar on how EPA’s Safer Choice program helps people find and have access to cleaning and other products made with safer ingredients and works in partnership with a broad range of stakeholders to prevent pollution. Speakers from industry, a nonprofit organization, academia and EPA discussed the growing impact of the Safer Choice program to increase use of safer ingredients throughout the value chain and how P2 practitioners can increase use and development of safer products.

EPA Unveils Additional Safer Choice Label for Safer, More Sustainable Cleaning for Outdoor Use
EPA recently announced two important steps forward for its programs to help reduce embodied greenhouse gas emissions of construction materials, made possible by a $350 million investment in the Biden-Harris Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act.
On Sept. 18, as part of EPA’s efforts to prevent pollution and empower people to find products with ingredients that are safer for public health and the environment, the Agency launched an Outdoor Use Safer Choice label. This new label expands on EPA’s existing Safer Choice label and would identify outdoor use products — like pet care products, fire defense products, and car, boat, or grill cleaners — that meet additional EPA criteria to help protect the environment.
Currently, more than 50 Safer Choice-certified products meet the additional criteria for outdoor use. EPA expects the Outdoor Use Safer Choice label to be on products as early as next year. Today, people can also find products that are Safer Choice-certified for outdoor use on the Safer Choice product search page by selecting the “Products with outdoor uses” box.

Congratulations to the 2024 Safer Choice Partner of the Year Awards winners! The 43 winners across 20 states and the District of Columbia were recognized for their achievements last year in the design, manufacture, promotion, selection and use of products with safer chemicals, that furthers outstanding or innovative source reduction. In support of Agency goals, winners were also recognized for work that promotes environmental justice, bolsters resilience to the impacts of climate change, results in cleaner air or water, improves drinking water quality or advances innovation in packaging.
