EPA Kicks Off ‘Pollution Prevention Works: A Storytelling Challenge for Students’
Under a new challenge launched by EPA last month, high school and college students can win up to $5,000 by telling stories about P2 using videos, written stories, infographics or story maps. These stories will illustrate how businesses identified through EPA’s Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) are reducing toxic chemical releases through innovative P2 practices and positively impacting the environment and communities. The submissions are due by Feb. 17, 2023.
Additionally, EPA is holding a webinar on Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2022, from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. EDT, to educate students about the challenge.
2023 Green Chemistry Challenge Awards Will Celebrate Innovation and Sustainability
Check out Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pollution Prevention Jennie Romer’s article on the 2023 Green Chemistry Award Challenge Awards in the American Chemical Society blog. EPA is accepting nominations for the awards from companies and institutions that developed a new green chemistry process or product that protects human health and the environment. The deadline to apply is Dec. 9, 2022.

Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pollution Prevention Jennie Romer Announces P2 Grant for Montana State University
At a ceremony at Montana State University, Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pollution Prevention Jennie Romer announced a new P2 grant that will help integrate Traditional Ecological Knowledge with P2 principles. The university is one of 39 recipients from across the country that will receive nearly $12 million in P2 grants made possible by President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s historic $100 million program investment.

Region 7 Now Accepting Applications for 2022 P2 Recognition Awards
Organizations and companies in EPA Region 7 are encouraged to apply for a P2 Recognition Award which celebrates P2 successes and best practices that exemplify environmental excellence and innovation. Organizations that implemented P2 projects between 2019-2021 in Region 7 (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and nine Tribal Nations) are eligible. Submit applications by Nov. 4, 2022.
Deputy Assistant Administrator for Pollution Prevention Jennie Romer to Serve on GSA’s Acquisition Policy Advisory Committee
The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has announced that EPA’s Deputy Assistant Administrator Jennie Romer will serve on its Acquisition Policy Federal Advisory Committee which focuses on driving regulatory, policy and process changes to embed climate and sustainability considerations in federal acquisition. The committee includes 28 members from government, industry and academia and will recommend steps GSA can take to support its workforce and industry partners.

An Overview of Tennessee’s Pollution Reduction and Recognition Program for Breweries, Wineries and Distilleries
Oct. 6, 12-1 p.m. EDT
Tennessee Sustainable Spirits is a voluntary recognition and technical assistance program administered by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation’s Office of Sustainable Practices. The program provides technical assistance and promotes best practices to wineries, wine growers, breweries and distilleries.
