Reminder: Submit Your Application for a P2 Grant by April 11
Don’t miss out! In February, EPA announced $23 million in two grant funding opportunities for states and tribes to help businesses adopt P2 practices. A new P2 grant of approximately $14 million is funded by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law which is available with no grantee matching requirement. There is also a second grant opportunity for the traditional P2 grants program for approximately $9 million. Proposals are due by April 11.
Additional information is available on www.grants.gov under Funding Opportunity Announcements EPA-HQ-OPPT-2022-001 and EPA-I-OCSPP-OPPT-FY2022-001. EPA anticipates announcing the grant recipients on a rolling basis starting in late summer.

EPA Calls for Nominations for the 2022 Safer Choice Partner of the Year Awards by May 31
EPA is now accepting nominations for the 2022 Safer Choice Partner of the Year Awards. The awards will recognize the leadership contributions of Safer Choice partners and stakeholders who, over the past year, have shown achievement in the design, manufacture, selection and use of products with safer chemicals that further outstanding or innovative source reduction. Submissions are due by May 31, 2022.
In support of the Biden-Harris Administration’s goals, EPA especially encourages submission of award applications that show how the applicant’s work in the design, manufacture, selection and use of those products promotes environmental justice, bolsters resilience to the impacts of climate change, results in cleaner air or water, or improves drinking water quality. Award winners will be recognized at a ceremony in the fall of 2022.
Upcoming Webinars
Energy Costs and Demands in Wastewater Treatment
April 4, 2022, 11 a.m. – noon EDT
This webinar will present a systematic approach to assessing energy costs in wastewater treatment and will make recommendations for how energy efficiency and other improvements can be presented and implemented in these facilities. Although wastewater treatment is a significant cost for many companies, improvements can be difficult to justify as many facilities have made significant investments in existing infrastructure and processes. This webinar is hosted by the East Carolina University Center for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering and sponsored in part by EPA’s Pollution Prevention Program.
Speaker: David Ladner, associate professor, Clemson University

Safer Alternatives for Toxic Solvents in Graffiti Management
April 6, 2022, noon – 1:30 p.m. EDT
This session will compare traditional graffiti removers with three safer graffiti removers that have been formulated and tested by the Institute for Research and Technical Assistance (IRTA). IRTA is a nonprofit organization that led a project in California, partially funded by EPA, to investigate and test alternative graffiti management methods. Other alternative processes and technologies – and their costs – will also be discussed during the webinar. This training is the first of a four-part series of webinars on safer alternatives to toxic chemicals and compounds high in VOCs.
Speaker: Kathleen Wolf, consultant and former executive director of the Institute for Research and Technical Assistance

Alternatives to Trichloroethylene (TCE)
April 14, 2022, 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. EDT
This webinar will include a presentation on lessons learned from the Minnesota Technical Assistance Program’s (MnTAP) TCE Alternatives Project and Minnesota’s first-in-the-nation TCE ban. For the past 3 years, the TCE Alternatives Project has helped Minnesota businesses replace TCE with safer and effective alternatives. Although there are a variety of alternatives to TCE, replacing the chemical can be challenging and many potential options carry serious health or environmental concerns of their own.
Speaker: Jane Paulson, senior engineer, Minnesota Technical Assistance Program (MnTAP)
Safer Alternatives for Toxic Solvents in Auto Repair Facilities
April 20, 2022, noon – 1:30 p.m. EDT
The Nevada Green Business Network and greenUp! are hosting a training on alternatives to the mineral spirits used in auto parts cleaners and the halogenated and nonhalogenated solvents used in auto aerosol cleaners. Many of these formulations are high in volatile organic compounds (VOC) and may pose toxicity problems. This training is part of a series of webinars on safer alternatives to toxic chemicals and compounds high in VOCs. Two additional trainings will be held in May on safer alternatives in industrial machine shops and in graffiti management.
Speaker: Kathleen Wolf, consultant and former executive director of the Institute for Research and Technical Assistance

Workshop on Fostering a Circular Economy of Manufacturing Materials
April 20 and 21, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. EDT each day
This workshop is hosted by the international standards organization ASTM and will focus on how technical standards can contribute to a circular economy for discarded materials from manufacturing. The objective of the workshop is to develop a roadmap for ASTM technical standards to support the formation and engagement of manufacturers in a circular economy. The event builds on a growing interest in establishing a circular economy to address a global need for reducing waste and reusing materials.
Speakers: Numerous speakers from industry, academia and nonprofit organizations
Energy Saving Opportunities in Compressed Air & Refrigerated Spaces
April 25, 2022, 11 a.m. – noon EDT
The East Carolina University Center for Sustainable Energy and Environmental Engineering will host a webinar sponsored in part by EPA’s P2 program to present the results of energy audits at industrial facilities that utilize compressed air and refrigeration. The webinar will also review recent changes in compressed air technology and discuss how those changes affect recommendations for performance improvements.
Speaker: Keith Goossen, professor, University of Delaware
