The P2 Hub
A Place to Get P2 Information, Analysis and Help
If you are one of our grantees that provides P2 technical assistance to businesses, a business interested in learning more about how P2 can help your operation reduce its environmental footprint and save money, or just a member of the general public that wants to learn more about P2, the P2 Hub and Helpline can help you.

- Provide P2 information, research, training and tools.
- Facilitate information sharing and discussion of P2 opportunities, best practices, and emerging trends.
- Conduct analyses to help grantees identify potential clients relevant to the P2 national emphasis areas (NEAs).
- Help grantees identify P2 opportunities that may exist at specific facilities by identifying chemical releases or environmental concerns that could be addressed through P2.
- Support grantees with engineering and technical advice to help them develop P2 solutions.
- Identify relevant P2 case studies that may offer potential P2 solutions that can be replicated.
Support from the P2 Hub and Helpline can be accessed by leaving a voicemail at (202) 566-0799, submitting a written question or request by email at p2hub@epa.gov, or by filling out a web form. Staff from the Helpline will follow-up with you as appropriate.

P2 National Emphasis Areas (NEAs)
For the P2 Grant Program, EPA identifies national emphasis areas (NEAs) to help focus resources to generate more impactful and measurable results, and to facilitate sharing of information among grantees working on similar issues.
The FY20-21 NEAs align with EPA’s Smart Sector Initiative to help develop sensible approaches that better protect the environment and public health. The NEAs also offer significant opportunities for pollution prevention, economic, and environmental impact in these areas:
- NEA #1: Food and Beverage Manufacturing and Processing
- NEA #2: Chemical Manufacturing, Processing and Formulation
- NEA #3: Automotive Manufacturing and Maintenance
- NEA #4: Aerospace Product and Parts Manufacturing and Maintenance
- NEA #5: Metal Manufacturing and Fabrication
EPA is excited to begin featuring projects supporting the NEAs.
NEA Spotlight: Food and Beverage Manufacturing and Processing
Thinking Outside the Box—By Boxing Up Technology
Using technology in a new way is helping our P2 grantee, Arizona State University (ASU), provide technical assistance to local food and beverage manufacturing facilities. As part of its energy and water assessments, ASU deploys a mobile sensor kit tailored to a facility’s specific water processes. These kits offer real-time monitoring at up to three locations/nodes within a facility (e.g., process water influent, process water effluent, and waste stream). The quick results allow decision-makers to better understand water quality and water flows within its manufacturing processes and make informed decisions. ASU has successfully used the kits at bakery and dairy facilities to identify new P2 opportunities. Check out the September 2020 webinar “Big Gulp: Lessons Learned on Providing P2 Tech Assistance to Food and Beverage Manufacturers” for more about ASU’s efforts.
