Message from ULCT President/ Spanish Fork Council Member Mike Mendenhall

March, 14, 2020

Fellow local elected leaders. Here is our moment! We didn’t ask for it, we didn’t anticipate it, but here it is. Data has shown that our friends and neighbors trust us more than anyone to communicate with them in an honest, compassionate, and non-partisan manner. Let’s lean into it! We were elected by hundreds or thousands of people to represent our communities, to protect and grow the quality of life in our cities and towns. Let’s not shrink from it, let’s rise up!

I am with you. The League Army is with you. Lifting together we will come through this period of time stronger together.

Keep these 4 C’s in mind when we’re communicating to our residents regarding the rapidly changing COVID-19 situation:

Calm-Correct-Clear-Concise

Below this message you'll see an example of advice we are communicating to residents in Spanish Fork. In 12 hours since posting this information, it has been viewed 36,000 times and shared over 400 times. Our residents are starved for the positive and factual.

Please reach out to myself or any of the League Board Members if we can help you and your city in any way.

We love you. We are grateful for your selfless service, leadership, and courage through this and the other issues facing the Cities and Towns across the greatest State in the Nation.

#CitiesWork

Let’s get to WORK!

Sincerely,

Mike Mendenhall

Information from the League, Governor, and Urgent Survey for Local Leaders

Cameron Diehl is representing ULCT on the State of Utah’s Child Care for Essential Employees Work Group and they have an urgent survey request for city managers, police/fire chiefs, and/or other relevant city leaders.

The work group was formed over the weekend after the Governor’s announcement on Friday that schools will be closed for (at least) two weeks. The work group will hold their first meeting today at 11 am to discuss the scope of the child care need for essential employees (health care professionals, first responders, other employees needed to protect the public’s health and safety, etc.). The child care need would be for any children from newborns to age 12 and, if left unmet, would prevent essential employees from being able to report for work. Some essential employees can rely on family members or neighbors to provide child care during this time, but we are concerned about the essential employees who don’t have that network. The work group consists of representatives from the Governor’s office, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, counties, cities, the health care industry, and the private sector.

On behalf of the work group, we request that city managers, police chiefs, fire chiefs, and/or other relevant municipal leaders fill out this brief survey immediately. The purpose of the survey is to evaluate the scope of this need at the city level and whether there are opportunities for partnership between cities, the State of Utah, and other stakeholders. Thanks in advance for your survey submission and thanks for your service to our communities in a challenging time. Please contact Cameron Diehl at cdiehl@ulct.org with any questions.

Results of this survey will be analyzed right away to solve this challenge, so please take take the survey and pass this message along to the appropriate parties so the administration can quickly our imput as they make decisions that will affect many of our residents.
