West Sussex Recycles

Are you recycling your empty aerosols?

Aerosols hero image

Did you know that the UK uses around 550 million metal aerosol cans every year? From hairspray and deodorant to furniture polish and oven cleaners, aerosols are everywhere in our homes – and the good news is, empty aerosol cans can be recycled at home!

According to our recent survey, 78% of residents did know this – but that means 22% didn’t! That's why we have partnered with Alupro and Arun District Council to raise awareness!

How to check if your aerosol can is empty?

Use the spray, squirt, shake method:

  • Spray – No hiss and nothing comes out? It’s empty.
  • Squirt – Nothing squirts out? It’s empty.
  • Shake – No sloshing sound? It’s empty.

If it is empty, pop it in your recycling bin. If it’s not, take it to your local Recycling Centre and let staff know – they’ll ensure safe disposal! Find out more on aerosol recycling on our website here or watch our video:

Recyclable and reusable poppies

Poppies

In April 2023, the Royal British Legion introduced a new, environmentally friendly way to support the Poppy Appeal: the plastic-free poppy. Made entirely from 100% paper, these poppies are designed to be both symbolic and sustainable and they’re available again this year.

We’d like to remind residents that these paper poppies can be recycled in your home recycling bin, making them a great choice for those looking to reduce waste. However, older plastic poppies are not recyclable at home, so please pop them in your general waste bin.

The Royal British Legion also offers a range of reusable poppy alternatives. These can be worn year after year, helping to cut down on waste while still showing your support. Simply make a donation and wear your reusable poppy with pride.

To learn more about the new poppies and other ways to support the Poppy Appeal, visit the Royal British Legion website.

Cloud 9

Did you know some of the local district and borough councils in West Sussex have a free app that provides access to council services from your phone?

This includes recycling information, latest council news and it can even send you notifications to remind you to put your bin out!

The app is available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store for free. Downloading the app can also allow you to be the first to hear about service changes or disruptions to your bin collections.

Download the app for your local council below:

Please note, the app is not available for Crawley Borough Council or Mid Sussex District Council.

Everything you need to know about food waste collections

Coming soon

Over the next 12 months, food waste collections will begin in West Sussex following a change in legislation from the government.

Don't worry, you'll be able to recycle all the same items as before in your current recycling bin. Food waste collections are an extra service with different bins.

Your local district or borough council will collect your food waste each week.

The food waste that's collected will go to an anaerobic digestion plant in Horsham. The plant recycles the waste into:

  • fertiliser to help farmers grow crops
  • energy to power the plant

The start date for your collections will depend on where you live. For more information on food waste collections in West Sussex, including what can be recycled as part of your new collection, visit our website

This will be an ongoing change but please note that all other Community Food Hubs will continue to operate at their usual times. We appreciate your understanding.

Upcoming waste prevention events

Gruffalo

Throughout West Sussex, we are proud to work alongside a team of passionate waste prevention and recycling volunteers. They attend public and private events to promote waste prevention, reuse, and recycling, and are eager to answer questions about the county's recycling services and waste reduction initiatives.

In addition to the public events listed below, we are participating in numerous privately hosted talks and events for local community groups, schools, and other organisations. If you would like our team to give a talk, visit your school, attend an event, or if you would like more information, please contact us at: waste.prevention@westsussex.gov.uk.

We also support our partners at the district and borough councils with community outreach in selected areas, engaging residents on both recycling and waste prevention topics.
