Have you seen our recycling animations?

Kerbside recycling video

As part of the Think Before You Throw campaign, over the last 2 years we have produced more than 30 videos answering your most frequently asked recycling questions, including 'how is recycling processed in West Sussex?', 'can I recycle black plastics?', 'why does my recycling need to be clean?' and more...

Check out our videos over on our YouTube channel and find out more about your recycling and how you can reduce your waste.

Keep your picnics low waste this summer

Packed lunch

Planning any days out over the summer holidays? Looking to bring your own lunch? Follow our top tips to keep you picnic low waste:

  • Don’t forget to take your reusable water bottle. Reusable bottles are a great way to reduce your waste whilst staying hydrated.
  • Reusable cutlery is another great way to reduce your waste. Instead of packing disposable knives and forks, take the real thing and bring them home at the end of the picnic for washing up.
  • You could also try to avoid packing home-made food in cling film or tin foil and use reusable containers instead. There are many great options available to keep food fresh such as beeswax wraps and Tupperware.
  • Make sure to only take what you need and avoid packing extra food. Plan realistically and don’t be afraid to split food. For example, if you've bought a whole tub of hummus and you know you are likely to only eat half, put half in a reusable container and leave the other half at home in the fridge to eat later.

Check out our blog for more information.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our recycling survey

Plastics recycling

Thank you to everyone who took part in our recycling survey throughout June! Our team has been busy reviewing the results, and of the more than 3,000 respondents, 92% said that recycling in West Sussex is very important, and we couldn't agree more!

The survey also revealed that there’s still some confusion around recycling plastic materials. In West Sussex, you can recycle all colours of plastic bottles, pots, tubs, and trays, as long as they’re clean, dry, and loose.

Plastic bags and wrapping, like crisp packets and carrier bags, cannot be recycled at home in West Sussex due to the way our recycling facility works. You can however, take these materials to your local supermarket for recycling. Find your nearest participating store online here.

Our website has plenty of information on recycling plastics, take a look here for more details.

As part of our Think Before You Throw campaign, we’ve created a short video about plastics recycling, why not check it out over on our YouTube channel?

Recycling Centre reuse shops

Reuse Shop

Thinking about picking up a new bike for yourself or your child this summer? Why not take a look at our reuse shops over at the Worthing and Billingshurst Recycling Centres? They regularly have a great selection of bikes in excellent condition, all looking for a second life.

But it's not just bikes! The reuse shops have lots of treasures, including books, furniture, plant pots and more!

Save money and reduce waste, it's a win-win! No appointment necessary to browse the shops, but if you would like to donate, please remember to book a slot before you arrive.

Upcoming waste prevention events

UKHarvest Food Hub

Throughout West Sussex, we are proud to work alongside a team of passionate waste prevention and recycling volunteers. They attend public and private events to promote waste prevention, reuse, and recycling, and are eager to answer questions about the county's recycling services and waste reduction initiatives.

In addition to the public events listed below, we are participating in numerous privately hosted talks and events for local community groups, schools, and other organisations. If you would like our team to give a talk, visit your school, attend an event, or if you would like more information, please contact us at: waste.prevention@westsussex.gov.uk.

We also support our partners at the district and borough councils with community outreach in selected areas, engaging residents on both recycling and waste prevention topics.
