Welcome to our September edition of Education Matters and to a new format. The focus on Strategic Planning within this edition is an appropriate way to start the year, as well as a great means to signpost the next stage in our work to address some of the challenges experienced over the last year.
Raising the achievement and progress of our children and young people, catching up on lost learning, and implementing new changes to the EYFS and early reading all need to be managed simultaneously. This will require the best of strategic planning if we are to be successful on multiple fronts.
With this in mind, this month’s articles provide pointers and resources to support and assist you in your planning. I hope that you find these both useful and informative.

Contingency Planning
Following the communication circulated to schools from Paul Wagstaff on 2nd September, we would like to draw your attention to the updated PHE's Education Settings Outbreak Pack. It gives the latest guidance for schools, FE colleges, special and residential schools in full. The pack also contains template letters for communicating with parents and pupils.
As per Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) 2021 advice, please ensure that your school has the capacity in the safeguarding team to comply. Do ensure that this is factored this into your contingency planning.
The Education and Skills Welfare inbox continues to be available to answer your questions: eswelfaregroup@westsussex.gov.uk
If you have any additional queries, please contact your link adviser or the relevant representative from the School Effectiveness team.

The Services for Schools team have been busy over the summer break adding new training sessions to our website ready for the start of the academic year. There are a wide range of topics now covered by our offer; you can gain an idea of some of the themes by visiting our Services for Schools Catalogue Training Pages.
To view individual training details, please use the search function on our website. Courses cover a diverse array of subjects including leadership, health and safety, early years, premises, finance, safeguarding, governance, inclusion, and teaching and learning.
In addition to this, the School Effectiveness team have set up a detailed webpage that provides information on the support and training they are able to offer.
We will continue to make good use of e-learning platforms where this approach works well, but, given the easing of restrictions, face to face training is available where appropriate.
If you have any questions about using the website or accessing training, please do not hesitate to contact us via school.services@westsussex.gov.uk
