WSCC 25% Levy Transfer Supports Local Economy
The First Round of WSCC Levy Transfer has taken place. A wide range of organisations were successful in their funding applications and will now benefit from the WSCC Apprenticeship Levy to provide funding for qualifications to develop workforces across West Sussex. Applications came from industries in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing sectors. We also had applications from the Social Care sector in care homes, nursing homes and voluntary sector groups. This is good for sowing the seeds of encouraging new staff into the sector as well as providing great career pathway opportunities to retain staff. In turn this is beneficial to both our residents and the economy of West Sussex. In total £600,000 has been identified to pay for apprenticeship qualifications - levels 2 to 7. Most students will begin their apprenticeships in September and we look forward to hearing how they progress. WSCC will be opening the second round of applications for the Apprenticeship Levy in the Autumn. Further information will be found:

The purpose of the festival is to offer people with learning disabilities the opportunity to rock out and enjoy live music in an authentic and safe festival environment. Our Learning and Development Gateway provides a great resource for a range of care organisations to provide mostly free training for their staff. However, we have an ongoing challenge with some organisations block booking staff onto the courses and then cancelling at the last minute or not showing up.
The impact is that those courses have to be cancelled with little notice and rescheduled which not only causes frustration on all sides but is also a waste of council resources and the public purse. These issues also delay staff and volunteers getting the vital training needed to ensure their services are run safely and remain compliant with local authority contracts and the Care Quality Commission.
It is also extremely costly if we have commissioned trainers, funded venues as often these still have to be paid for even if we have cancelled events. Unfortunately there are repeat offenders and the Learning and Development Team have no choice but to charge for cancelled places within 10 days of the event date or for non-attendance without extenuating circumstances as stated in their terms and conditions. Potentially this could result in their Gateway registration being suspended or cancelled. This is not the route we want to take. So, please can I ask that for 2019 a concerted effort is taken by managers and teams to ensure that when staff are booked onto the courses, that every effort is taken to attend those courses.
We fully appreciate that emergencies arise and we will do everything to accommodate a change in situation, if we can. Also, it is essential that when booking onto a course, that a mobile contact number is given. We only ever use mobile numbers to keep you up to date with confirmed bookings on events and cancellations. We will never use this for any other reason. This will enable us to ensure you are made aware immediately if a trainer is off sick, if weather or travel conditions affect your event or an emergency arises and a course is cancelled.
Thank you for your support in ensuring we utilise our resources efficiently.
Important Changes to Learning & Development Training Events
To help address our financial challenge and to protect our L&D offer as far as possible, we have made the difficult decision to no longer offer refreshments on training events where there is an on-site facility where refreshments can be self-purchased by delegates.
This will affect all events delivered via Learning & Development Services with event code prefixes of CO, AD and CH, any other training departments whose events are bookable through the L&D Gateway remain unchanged.
** please check event joining instructions for information specific to your booked and confirmed event space **
