Improving Services for Children with SEN&D and their Families
Strengthening our West Sussex Inclusive Practice through School SEND Partnerships
50 West Sussex schools and education settings have been working together to share and develop effective support and practices for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. A range of good practice reports have been produced to highlight examples of the work that is underway within local schools and the impact this is having on staff, children, young people and their families. Parent carer representatives from West Sussex Parent Carer Forum and Local Authority Officers have also supported the work. The first three reports can be found on The Local Offer using the link below.
Annual Review Practice and Transition Support reports will be published in the Spring Term 2019. Please contact Bella Cobbyfor further information.
As you will see, we have tried to make the Statement more helpful and informative to families but providing information on family support including other services that can help families. The document has been co-produced with the West Sussex Parent Carer Forum (WSPCF). The document is designed to give an overview of services that can support families along with links to more information that families can be signposted to.
Please familiarise yourselves with the document and share as it gives good information about the short breaks service.
West Sussex Special School Nursing tool wins award
An assessment tool which identifies the nature of nursing in 12 West Sussex Special Schools has won a prestigious national award in child health.
Please see here, the link to the Eventbrite booking site where you can browse all Parent Carer courses on offer through Coastal West Sussex Mind. The brochures are updated regularly but do not always have the latest information so the website is a useful resource.

A MASSIVE THANK YOU!
Thank you to those who nominated a young person in care or a care leaver for the EPIC Awards. Our nomination scores on the doors succeeded our target, reaching a total of 256!
We want to ensure this day is incredible for these young people, therefore we need you!
Do you know any celebrities that our young people will know who could make a short video clip or even make a special appearance on the day?
Do you have any Harry Potter themed props we can borrow?
A secret between you and I, we already have a Star of Dr Who and also the best known CBBC presenter coming, but shhhh this must be kept a secret!
We are currently creating a Lifelong Service for anyone that has a lifelong disability acquired before the age of 25 and or autism. The service is for people that require social care support either as a child and/or adult. The vision of Lifelong Services is to provide a consistent approach to working in partnership with children, young people and adults with lifelong disabilities, autism and their families. We will:
offer early intervention
build on an individual’s strength to develop skills and independence
promote and maintain safety and good health; and
facilitate employment
We will make the best use of public money, provide a more joined up and coherent experience for the people we work with and enable individuals to live a ‘good life’ as defined by them. This involves developing a consistent approach across education, social care and health. We want to have co-production of the service so if you are interested in being involved please email lifelongservices@westsussex.gov.uk
One area we are focusing on is when young people transition into adulthood. We are currently creating a transitions Wiki to help young people and their families. The Wiki will be available on the Local Offer early 2019. If you would like further information aboutLifelong services, please get in touch using the email address above.
