Celebrating the work of School Improvement in West Sussex
A message from Deborah Myers, Director of Education &
Skills:
As the promoter of high standards for children of West
Sussex, the strategy for School Improvement challenges school leaders to secure
improvements no matter what their school’s status or governance
arrangements. Last year’s Key Stage 2 results were very disappointing.
Over the last 12 months the team have been working hard with schools to
support and challenge them to improve standards, especially at Key Stage 2.
As a result of this, we are pleased to see that results at Key Stage 2 have
increased by 10% among the proportion of children reaching the expected standard
in Reading, Writing and Maths.
We are also pleased to celebrate that the
proportion of children in West Sussex reaching a “good level of development” in
the Early Years Foundation Stage has, in 2017, achieved an outcome in line with
the national average. This has resulted in West Sussex being placed 78 out of
150 local authorities nationally, a rise of 19 places in the national rankings.
The Early Years team in IPEH and School Improvement have worked hard with all
our providers to help them achieve this.
We are not there yet and need
to further accelerate the pace of improvement. There is still a lot of work to
be done if we are to meet our bold ambition of being one of the top performing
local authorities in the country.
Working with schools and children to
support them to achieve the best start in life is a privileged, rewarding and
intensive role.
