Safeguarding Week 2017
The
West Sussex Safeguarding Children Board, the West Sussex Safeguarding Adults Board
and the Safer West Sussex Partnership are joining forces to deliver a week of
safeguarding learning events. The key purpose of the week is to provide a range
of learning and development opportunities for staff and volunteers working with
adults at risk and children in West Sussex, aimed at improving their
safeguarding knowledge, skills and understanding, and promoting joint working.

 DofE Annual Conference
West Sussex DofE Team proudly host this year’s Annual training conference on Saturday 11 November at Hurstpierpoint College. The event will take place from 10am – 3:30pm. The day is aimed at all those in West Sussex delivering DofE and will offer a chance to :-
- Network with other DofE volunteers and members
- Share good practice and obtain advice
- Provide opportunity for training and information
- Thank people for their hard work at the end of expedition season

EPIC
Awards - Final Total!
A
BIG thank you to those who nominated young people for the EPIC awards this
year. Our target was 200 nominations…. AND WE EXCEEDED IT!
We
want to thank each and every one of you and look forward to celebrating young
peoples’ achievement on 10 December at our event in Butlins.
 Invitations will be sent out to all nominated young
people over the next two weeks and judging will take place.

You See Me Now?
Brighton
Dome’s groundbreaking project is being shown on 9 November.
Can
You See Me Now? is a verbatim, documentary theatre-style show combining
life experiences with film and original music offering a unique and powerful
insight into the lives of young women navigating school, Social Services and
the Care System. Hard-hitting and unapologetic with a softness not always seen,
Miss Rep are the voices you don’t often hear, the voices that force us take a
look at the structures and inequalities of society.

 Home-Start Arun, Worthing and Adur
This is a local charity that supports families
with young children who are going through challenging times. Home-Start
recruits and trains volunteers to support parents in their home once a week,
for up to 6 months.
Families can get support with challenges such as bereavement, multiple births, isolation, mental ill health, disability, illness
and money management. Support is for mums AND dads.
Parents can
self refer or their health visitor/ professional can refer them. The service

and Mid Sussex Voluntary Action’s (HAMSVA’s) website now includes a link to a
database of volunteering opportunities.

you are thinking of volunteering and want to know what’s out there, visit their website and explore the many
ways in which you can get involved in your community.

Speech
and Language Therapy Service
There
have been changes on how to make a Speech and Language referral for pre-school
children, Speech and Language advice sessions for parents and making a request
for Speech and Language Setting Support. Please see here for these changes.

your child due to start reception, or transfer to junior or secondary school in
September 2018? If so apply for your child’s school place online now.
The
application deadline for reception or transfer to junior school places is
Monday 15 January 2018 and the deadline for secondary school places is Tuesday
31 October.

You
could save up to £140 off your energy bill?
Some
of the energy suppliers in the UK are offering a £140 discount
to customers on low incomes and certain means tested benefits.
Pensioners
receiving eligible benefits automatically receive the Warm Home Discount, but
anyone else who qualifies must apply. There are standard qualifying
benefits, but some energy suppliers offer the discount to a wider range of
customers.
The
Warm Home Discount scheme is
limited,

 Compass Card West
Sussex
Compass Card West Sussex is a free credit card-sized
discount card that opens up hundreds of leisure opportunities for children with SEND, from 0-25.
Since the card’s launch in
April last year, almost 2000 children and young people have registered, but
there are many more who haven’t yet signed up.
