National Citizen Service (NCS)

NCS Teams have worked hard on their Social Action Projects this summer.

270 young people across Arun & Chichester have given over 8100 hours volunteering in their community and have raised over £5000 for charities including Enable Me, Snowdrop Trust, Chestnut Tree House, PACSO, Allsorts, and Tommy’s.

If you know a young person who has finished Year 11 and is under 18, let us know as they could also go on this amazing NCS journey with other young people.

West Sussex service achieves Unicef ‘Baby Friendly’ accreditation

Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust’s services for mothers and babies in West Sussex, have been awarded full ‘Baby Friendly’ accreditation by Unicef (United Nations Children’s Fund). The prestigious award was made to the West Sussex ‘Healthy Child Programme’ following a rigorous assessment which included interviews with parents. In making the award Unicef’s assessment team said it was “clear that pregnant women and new mothers receive a very high standard of care”.

The Baby Friendly Initiative, set up by Unicef and the World Health Organisation, is a global programme which provides a practical and effective way for health services to improve the care provided for all mothers and babies. The award is given to organisations after an assessment by a Unicef team has shown that recognised best practice standards are in place. For more information about UNICEF’s baby friendly initiative visit their website.

App

Family Assist

A pilot has been launched for Family Assist - an innovative new support system via emails and an internet platform which is being trialled by Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WSHT), the County Council and Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust.

The first of its kind in the UK, Family Assist is an online hub of information which has been professionally approved and can be accessed by public and professionals.

From 7 August midwives at WSHT will be signing up pregnant women to create their own Family Assist Pathways in order to receive relevant information and tailored support and advice via email; once registered they will have the option of adding up to five people to their pathway. There is also the capacity for registered users to email professionals with non-emergency queries. It currently contains information and advice from conception to twenty months and there are aims for this to expand further in the future.

The Family Assist website and email system complements an app which is currently being used by County Council frontline staff called Baby Buddy. Baby Buddy is a free app targeted more specifically at younger families that offers guidance through pregnancy and the first six months of a baby’s life. Users can create their own identity in the app (avatar) to follow during their pregnancy, keep track of appointments, store photos and access a range of short films, among other benefits.

Five to Thrive

Five to Thrive

Your child's body grows better when you give the child good food. Your child's brain grows better when you do five simple things.

Respond * Cuddle * Relax * Play * Talk

Talk: All sorts of verbal communication can be included in the category of ‘talking’. Talking builds brain patterns for language development, cognitive function and social interaction. Words are therefore vital to the child’s pre-cognitive patterning. Strengthening the language centres of the brain also improves self-regulation, as feelings are processed through expressing them in language.

UTC

Crawley Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) is complete!

We are delighted to announce that the improvements to the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) at Crawley Hospital have been completed.

The centre has been through an extensive refurbishment, with upgrades including new, modern treatment rooms and separate waiting areas for young children and young adults, to give greater privacy and fast access to urgent care professionals.

The UTC provides care for people with urgent, but non-life-threatening health needs, including children and young people. We want to raise its profile, particularly with families living in Horsham and East Grinstead, who may not know how it could help them.

Dr Patience Okorie, Clinical Lead for Children and Maternity Services for NHS Crawley Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “The improved Urgent Treatment Centre is an excellent addition to the services for people in Crawley and the surrounding areas, particularly for families. Those with urgent but non-life-threatening conditions are advised to come to the UTC rather than A&E, helping to reduce the pressure on A&E services whilst receiving excellent care”.
