Divisional Police Awards

Divisional Police Awards

An award ceremony was held on 19 June, where a team of 15 including those from social care, victim support, police and sexual health attended, along with Mark Frankland, Principal Manager Operations and Safeguarding and Child Protection.

"It was a fantastic humbling experience" - Helen McCutchan, Clinical Matron/Safeguarding and CSE link, Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

"We were the last to be presented because we were awarded the Chief Constable’s Certificate of Merit on his personal recommendation. This was a complete surprise to our staff and a really positive endorsement of the work we have done with regards to CSE issues."

Sexual health got a significant mention and was commended with the care provided and particularly the fast-track clinic set up to ease the victims access to testing. This model has now been adopted for CSE operations as an example of good practice.

Well done all!

Online Research

UK Safe Interest Centre have researched about the effects of online pornography for young people. Did you know...

  • 65% of 15-16 year olds have seen online pornography
  • 53% of boys who had seen pornography thought it was ‘realistic’
  • 36% of children who had taken nude or semi-naked self-photographs reported that they had been asked to show these images to someone online.

For more information, view the research study on their website.

Voice and Engagement

CICC

Children in Care work with the Fire and Rescue Service!

The Children in Care Council (CICC) gave suggestions to the Fire and Rescue Service about a new project, informing young people in care and care leavers about fire safety awareness and what to do if there was a fire in their home.

The group shared ideas about how the key messages could be achieved with different age groups, doing a variety of activities e.g. assessing laptop and tablet dangers, cooking safely and how to cope in an emergency.

Young people tested their knowledge on the steps you would take to get out safely in the event of a fire.

This is part of a development project the CICC are working on with Fire and Rescue.

Creative Ambassadors wanted!

We’ve been contacted by a youth-led creative network, Livity, who are looking for young people aged 11-16 from across the UK to join their panel of creative ambassadors to help shape the future of an exciting project.

The panel takes place on WhatsApp, and ambassadors are expected to commit approximately 2-3 hours per week for 6 weeks to share opinions on creative work. Each ambassador will be paid £200 for their involvement, as well as receiving a reference for their CV / personal statement explaining their involvement and the skills gained.

Limited spaces! Email ellie.locke@ukyouth.org if this is of interest for the young people you work with.

Can you help?

Our SEND Youth Participation Worker recently met a young man with a Learning Disability who would really like to set up an anti-bullying support/social action group in the Chichester area. Would anyone be able to help him out with suggestions for venues where they could meet please? He’d also like to apply for a small amount of funding to help with the costs of running the group. Does anyone know of any charitable funds for example that might consider his application? Any suggestions gratefully received, please contact Rachel Sadler.

FareShare Food Cloud

FareShare FoodCloud

FareShare FoodCloud helps not-for-profit organisations, such as schools and youth groups to receive surplus food from local Tesco supermarkets. We are keen to ensure that you are aware of the free produce, which is available to those you support. We can arrange for you to collect fresh produce such as bread, fruit and vegetables from a store close to you.

Vanessa Burns, manager of YMCA Maidstone Tovil Pre-School, says FoodShare FoodCloud has saved them money, as well as changed the way parents and children think about recycling and the environment.

To find out more, view their video 1 and video 2. If you are interested in taking part in this project, please contact Shelley.wright@fareshare.org.uk / 07572 228014.

Time Aside Sensory Art

Time Aside will be delivering some workshop sessions in Bognor and Crawley Down for children, young people and their families.

Please pass onto any families you feel would be interested.

Five to Thrive

Five to Thrive

Your child's body grows better when you give the child good food. Your child's brain grows better when you do five simple things.

Respond * Cuddle * Relax * Play * Talk

Relax: Stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol can injure the human brain. Under the impact of unregulated stress, these excessive hormones change blood supply to key areas of the brain such as those that control language and the self-regulation of mood and impulse. This is the organic explanation for the survival mechanism of fight or flight, in which brain functions that slow down response times (such as thinking) are switched off.
