Carers Week

Let’s all become more caring this Carers Week

We’re being urged to become more carer friendly this Carers Week (12-18 June).

West Sussex County Council, Carers Support West Sussex and the NHS are partnering to raise awareness of the contribution family and friend carers make within communities.

Over 40 events will take place during the week throughout several different West Sussex locations. The varied activities include Punjabi street food and afternoon tea. Find out more!

Keep an eye on social media throughout the week as video diaries will be published on Facebook: West Sussex Matters and Twitter: @WSCCNews.

Talking to young people about extremism online

In the wake of a terror attack such as those in London and Manchester, it’s only natural for young people to be upset by the information they may be seeing online and on the news. This may lead to curiosity about the motives that lead to such extreme action and, one of the prominent places they will go searching for this information is online.

Read more from the Professionals Online Safety Helpline (POSH) to help when talking to young people about extremism online.

Voice and Engagement

Empty

Empty Plate Café celebrate its first year!

The Empty Plate Café project is the first “pay as you feel café" in West Sussex, was developed by an IPEH employee, Tori Hunter and her partner.

On 5 April, it celebrated its first year achievement where the aim is simple... to stop families not being able to afford food; enabling them to eat a hot, wholesome meal whenever they want whilst cutting down on perfectly good food going to landfill.

These meals are available on a “pay as you feel” basis, so in lieu of payment people can wash up, hand out flyers to pay as much or as little as they wish. If someone cannot afford to pay, they can still leave with a full belly!

4,956 plates of food were served in the past year, saving 9.75 tons of food from landfill. 44 crisis food packages were given away and 2 volunteers were supported back to work!

Tori has won various awards, including 2016 Worthing Business Award for The Community Project, ‘More Radio’ Award and Silver and Gold Awards for ‘Eat out Eat well’.

Open every Tuesday between 11am-6pm and Wednesdays between 8:30am-3pm. Empty Plate Café, The Lovett Hub, Maybridge Square, Durrington, BN12 6HB.
