The new Integrated Prevention and Earliest Help Service (IPEH) was launched on 1 April 2017. Over the coming months, the newsletters that you receive from all of our services will be reviewed to ensure you get the right information about our what’s on offer. However, in the meantime we will keep sending our Think Family and Early Help news and all other newsletters in their current form, to make sure you keep getting all the information you need.

IPEH contact details: Group email addresses including MASH and Family Support Networks (FSN) will remain the same as what you are already using. We look forward to continuing our work together on making a difference for families, children and young people.

Manifesto promising improved support for new parents and infants launched

1001

Families and infants are being promised a more ‘secure foundation’ of help under a new manifesto launched on 2 March 2017.

The 1001 Critical Days Manifesto for West Sussex highlights the importance of a child’s wellbeing during the vital days from when a baby is conceived until age two.

It aims to ensure that every baby receives sensitive, appropriate and responsive care whilst also ensuring parents feel confident that they are raising their children in a loving and supportive environment.

West Sussex-based services and professionals are being asked to support the manifesto by visiting www.westsussex.gov.uk/1001Days.

Changes to HolistiX

HolistiX

On 31 March 2017 we introduced some changes to the Holistix system. A full list is available here but some of the key changes are below:

  • Significant Others - The amount of information that you are required to enter has been reduced. For example, Ethnicity and First Language are no longer required.
  • Wider Assessment - A Wider Assessment can now be created only as a standalone document. The tickbox that allowed you to add these 2 pages to an ordinary Assessment has been removed.
  • Distance Travelled - When you complete a 2nd or subsequent Distance Travelled form, the scores from the previous form will be visible. This should make it easier to complete each new form. Also, a new ‘Family Journey’ screen will allow you to see the progress of these scores over time.
  • Ethnicity - To bring this in line with other IT systems, the Ethnicity picklist has been split, so that you select a person’s Ethnicity Category followed by Sub-Ethnicity. When you are next in Holistix please check that your current cases show the correct Ethnicities.

Jane Downes

We are sad to inform you that following an illness, our colleague Jane Downes recently passed away. Jane first worked for WSCC as a residential Child Care Officer in 1994. She later moved to the newly formed Youth Offending Service in 1999 initially working in the Final Warning Team, then with the Court and Case Management Team, and most recently as Youth Justice Support Officer in the Early Intervention Team.

Jane had suffered with health issues over recent years, but throughout Jane showed commitment to help and support young people.

Jane always stated that she felt most passionate about preventative work, supporting and diverting young people away from offending and the youth justice system as early as possible. Jane was a highly valued member of the team and service, and leaves many friends and colleagues in the Youth Offending Service and partner organisations. Jane will be sadly missed and remembered by all those who knew her for her warmth and kindness. Our condolences to her family her friends and many colleagues.

CSE Awareness Day

Amanda Radley

On Saturday 18 March, national Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) Awareness Day was represented, a day serving to highlight the issues surrounding child sexual abuse.

CSE is a serious form of child abuse presently affecting the lives of young people and their families in West Sussex. It can take many different forms, such as online or direct abuse, and occur to anyone aged 18 and under – irrespective of their gender, race, sexuality or social background.

A film has been created featuring Amanda Radley, Strategic Partnership Lead for High Risk Adolescents. Please take a moment to watch this short film, where Amanda is speaking about how best to use the CSE screening tool and accompanying behaviour chart. We also encourage you to explore the information and guidance for professionals and families on our campaign page, visit www.westsussex.gov.uk/CSE.

Baby Grow with Five to Thrive

FtoT

Your child's body grows better when you give the child good food. Your child's brain grows better when you do five simple things.

Respond * Cuddle * Relax * Play * Talk

Play: At every opportunity during the day when a young child needs stimulation, play can provide it. For young babies this can include wakeful times after feeding, during and after nappy changes, and at any time when the baby is actively seeking stimulation. Older children thrive on play, and love it when parents are playful without being intrusive.
