The Councillors and Officers of West Berkshire Council are deeply saddened by the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family.
Paying tribute to His Royal Highness Prince Philip earlier today, Chairman of West Berkshire Council, Councillor Graham Pask said:
"Today we send our sincere condolences to the Royal Family following the death of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Philip was admired by a great many people for a lifetime of public service to this country. In West Berkshire, and across the country, we respected the steadfast dedication to his role and we join the Royal Family in mourning his passing today.
"Throughout his public service Prince Philip supported many good causes but will be remembered most for his Duke of Edinburgh Awards. I have had the pleasure of meeting young people who have taken part in the scheme and have seen for myself the positive impact on the lives of young people in West Berkshire. It's a great scheme and something which will continue to inspire future generations."
In the coming days we will be paying our respects to The Duke of Edinburgh and know people across the District will want to do the same.
The flag is flying at half-mast today above our Market Street offices as a mark of respect to His Royal Highness.
Residents are asked not to lay flowers, but to consider instead donations to a charity of their choosing or one of the charities or organisations which The Duke of Edinburgh supported in his public duties. More information about this is available on the Royal Household website.
Members of the public wishing to express their condolences can also send a message to the Royal Family.
Further announcements about any other local arrangements will be made in due course. In the meantime, more information on Prince Philip and his life can be found on the Royal Household website.
