Launch of new Environment Strategy
West Berkshire Council has adopted a new Environment Strategy this week.
The strategy sets out the steps we intend to take, together with our partners, in order to become a carbon neutral district by 2030. It contains a number of initiatives and projects that will contribute towards the target; through infrastructure improvements, support for industry, investment in active lifestyle opportunities, and enhanced community engagement.
Among the activities included in the strategy are:
- The launch of a first of its kind Climate Bond to finance green infrastructure projects.
- A series of Solar PV projects, ultimately supplying a significant proportion of the District’s electricity needs.
- Further investment in electric vehicle charging points.
- Natural carbon reduction measures.
- The establishment of wild flower verges.
- Support and incentives for new and existing green businesses.
The strategy’s progress will be monitored through the council’s Environment Board and its delivery will be supported through the newly-established Environment Delivery Team.

A new scheme has been launched which gives residents and community groups a unique way to invest directly in a greener future for the district.
Residents can choose to invest from as little as £5 into the new scheme, which is known as a Community Municipal Investment (CMI) - a bond or loan mechanism issued by a Council directly to the public. The money raised will fund green schemes in the district - such as solar power generation - whilst giving residents a return on their investment.
The scheme is being provided in partnership with the ethical online crowdfunding platform Abundance Investment, which is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

We've been busy installing new solar panels on the roofs of our buildings.
Work started earlier this month to install solar at six sites - including the Phoenix Centre (pictured) and our Market Street offices in Newbury. These sites will enable us to generate around 386,000 kWh of electricity each year.
The work is part of a pilot project to install solar panels on Council buildings. Once the pilot is complete, we'll be looking at the what we can learn before then appling this to a larger project with the specific aim of expanding the use of solar panels across the estate held by the Council.
