Message from Phil Leivers

Dear Colleagues,

We are awaiting the publication of the revised school Covid -19 guidance, due later this afternoon. I’m sure we are all anticipating significant changes following the Prime Minister’s announcement last night.

A reminder that there is an Engagement session planned for later this afternoon and for tomorrow. This will be an opportunity for you to raise any concerns or issues you have with Public Health colleagues and will allow us to gather feedback to give to the DfE. Look forward to seeing you later.

Hot off the press, DfE have just published the revised guidance https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/actions-for-schools-during-the-coronavirus-outbreak

Best wishes

Phil

Health and Safety

Reporting of confirmed cases to the Health and Safety Team – Reminder

In light of Public Health’s announcement last week (1 July) concerning the reporting procedure for positive cases, please can I urge that all maintained schools continue to report all cases within a member of staff to the Health and safety team. This is required for both monitoring and potentially formal reporting.

To make this process as simple as possible for schools, you are not required to use a specific form for reporting and can simply cut and paste the attached into an email and send it to natalie.barrow@wolverhampton.gov.uk

If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

City students wow judges with their Solutions for the Planet

Pupils have demonstrated how to put the planet first after wowing the judges at the finals of a national environmental contest.

Students from Heath Park School and Colton Hills Community School made the grade in this year's Solutions for the Planet competition, which encourages 11 to 14-year-olds to come up with Big Ideas to solve sustainability issues that matter to them.

Safeguarding

Update on Safeguarding

The DfE have published today, a draft of the revised KCSIE guidance

(KCSIE September 2021 - FOR INFORMATION). This is for information so schools and

colleges can plan for the commencement of the guidance on 1 September 2021.

Until the new revised guidance commences on 1 September 2021, the existing

statutory guidance - Keeping Children Safe in Education 2020 is still in force and is

what schools and colleges must continue to have regard to.

They have also published alongside a draft of the revised stand-alone

advice 2021. This is for information only. Until the new revised advice commences

on 1 September 2021, the existing advice Sexual violence and sexual harassment

between children in schools and colleges, is still in force and is what schools and

colleges should continue to have regard to.

To support schools we have commissioned Ann Brown, former headteacher, to update the relevant documents and presentations for schools to have in time for the beginning of the Autumn term.

Following further discussions and consultations I am now in the process of finalising the job description and person specification to recruit to the vacant Education Safeguarding officer post so that there will be both a universal offer with the addition of a SLA for schools to purchase. Thank you for your support in this development.

Phil Leivers

Head of Education Excellence.

Widening the Curriculum

Many primary and secondary schools have expressed an interest in ensuring they promote and celebrate diversity through their curriculum offer.

In the autumn term, Education Excellence would like to support schools with this.  We plan to set up working groups to look at different subjects and curriculum areas and produce resources that can be used to diversify the curriculum and present a wider and more multi-cultural education for all pupils.

This work will begin with a Teams meeting in September. It is open to colleagues from Early Years, Primary and Secondary schools and settings. If you are interested in being part of this work, please can you express your interest by contacting either:

Behaviour Intervention Programmes at Lawnswood Campus

In September we are offering two Behaviour Intervention Programmes for both Primary and Secondary schools in a quiet space on Lawnswood Campus called Lawnswood Learning Link:

  1. Building Behaviour 4 Learning Programme – Monday to Friday, 6 Weeks.
  2. Exclusion Prevention Programme – Monday to Friday, 1 session to 10 sessions.

The feedback from schools regarding these programmes this year has been excellent.  The Exclusion Prevention Programme has been the most popular programme; reducing fixed term exclusions, preventing permanent exclusions, unpicking the behaviour and supporting young people with a toolkit of strategies for self-regulation and behaviour management is absolutely the way forward!

Please see the attached leaflets (leaflet 2) for further information.
